My iPhone battery life is horrible. Can I get a battery replacement if I go to the Apple Store, given that I have a 2 year warranty?

Recently the battery life for my iPhone 4S has been getting worse and worse. Now I can only use my phone for 2 to 2 and a half hours before it dies. (With about 4-5 hours on standby) if I go to the apple store, can I get a free replacement battery? I have the 2-year warranty.

Answer:
There is a specific battery diagnostic test that Apple can run remotely (via phone/chat support) or in an Apple store. My 5 was shutting down quite a bit with anywhere between 5-35% remaining battery life indicated. Once I ran the remote test the Apple Support rep confirmed that my (in warranty) 5's battery was failing the test. The genius ran it again in store and I saw where my battery fell on a very specific chart of what is considered acceptable. It was just underneath the threshold so they swapped the phone right away! My suggestion is to contact Apple Support and stress that this is a tool you rely heavily on to conduct your business. I suspect that as long as it is still covered by warranty (or only recently expired), and it fails their test, you should get your phone swapped.

If this is a hardware problem then apple will probably replace your battery or phone. If it is because you are massively using power-intensive apps and surfing on the Internet a lot, then the won't do anything for you.

You will need to request an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar at a store that is convenient for you. I had a similar issue where the battery life was pretty short and then the percentage would drop suddenly from 20% to say 9%. The 'genius' / tech was very helpful and showed me some of the tools that Apples has to inspect your phone. One of them parses the crash logs on the iPhone to help them identify troublesome apps and also can pull the charging history of the battery. One of the interesting things was that though my battery was functioning within stated specifications (it was not a battery life issue), the genius recommended a clean wipe and restore. Though I was quite skeptical, after validating the iCloud backup, wiping the phone clean and restoring, the battery life had improved quite a bit. It turns out that all the crud from apps tried and then deleted (registering of push notifications) may not clear out and eventually (just like PCs) become a measurable burden on the cpu cycles (which then drains the battery quicker). Not sure if this applies to you - please talk to the Apple store folks. My overall experience with them was very positive (provided you have that appointment booked) and was pretty satisfied with the resolution. Hope this helps!

No one can speak for Apple. I'd recommend going to an Apple Store and asking. Depends on all sorts of factors.

I just had my iPhone 5s replaced because the battery was only lasting about 6 hours. Because it's only 6 months old I called Telus and they told me to bring it in. I didn't even have to run tests for them to submit a claim. 2 days later they called and said my new phone was ready for pick up. Then I did a back up and exchanged my old one for a new phone. I didn't even have to turn in my old phone when they ordered the new one. tl;dr check with your carrier.
