A career in magazines or publishing?

What do I need to know if I want to pursue a career as an editor at a publishing house?

  • I am looking for some insights into the real Book publishing scene in India. I would like to join the Editorial department of a reputed publishing house in India. I work as a content writer and social media marketer currently. I have a degree in a related field (Visual Communication). What would I need to know if I wanted to start a career with the Editorial team? What is the work like and the pay. Any little insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First of all congratulations, as you will definitely be having a flourishing career wherever you go. Indian publishing industry lacks a lot of thing and good online marketing and editing stands right next to healthy competition in the top three problems. By reputed houses I take that you mean the tier 1 publishers. There is a big fat tier 2 where it is quite easy to start and solidify your profile to get into tier one. Then there is a tier three and publishers below that. I doubt they even have editors for there work. By market reputation you can easily identify who's who. First things you need to have is good editing skills and a decent experience (for tier one). In case you lack experience, an equally solid approach might help. Harsh reality but I don't see a third way. Although these two sum up the most approaches. There are some things that most people won't tell you but they can have a good impact. Like having a blog: you're into social media; market your blog and have a good following. It makes a huge impact on the publisher. Show off your skills: do you have a story that went viral... or maybe an answer on quora or some good work of yours widely recognised. Highlight that when applying. Be ready for rejections and to hear that you're not good enough. And don't make enemies. They might be competitors but inside they're all friends. I tried to cover random little things. In case it looks like I forgot anything, do comment.

There are positions like this: . Content Writer Editor Content Creator Content Writer & Editor You can check and apply there. But at this young age do not get pushed to one area - like - writing on shares, or business or only entertainment etc but see that your presence is felt in different areas. Instead of looking for publishing houses ( if I may be allowed) you can try for companies like Deloitte, Accenture and IBM where they are looking for real talent in writing skills.   As you have Visual Communication degree that will help you. One thing is that - you separate the Social Media Marketer from content writer - instead you call yourself as communication specialist.

I am a convert from Engineer to Editor. I work in the Editorial department at Thomson Reuters(a wing of Reuters and Thomson Press) currently. And, if you are looking for a stable job then many MNCs today are looking for Content Editors. Upload your resume on naukri/monster. That's how I got this job. I freelance as a Editor too on independent projects. I can assist you more on this if interested. I liked the suggestions above too but that takes some time I guess.
