    The US is getting better and better and we are heading in the right direction. Our young players like Altidor and those who come after him will take us places. I don't know what we'll do in 2010 but I really don't think we will have a result like in 2006 unless we are in the group of death again. Our new talent does look far better than anything we have ever produced before and that shows how much we are improving. Now as far as our best athletes playing in other sports, the athletes that play basketball or American football play those sports because that's the sport they are suited to play and would be best at playing. Size is criticle in those sports more than it is in soccer. Naturally a tall athlete would likely play basketball than soccer. That's a no brainer. Now just because they are bigger athletes doesn't mean they are the best or are better than footballers.

he'll be the first of many but that doesnt mean anything for the US. if the players are smart they'll go to other places eg europe (or wherever the money is) to get fame, salary & most importantly the glory...the USA, my beloved home, we have a good league (MLS) but a bad national team (but improving)... and patriotism means nothing when trying to get a job.

i think so!!!!!!! we have some very good individual youth players. however that does not make a team. the few good ones we have will be going over to the glory in Europe. that means the USA will still place low, unfortunately :(

Football in the US is gonna get better, with more and more immigrants coming from football dominated countries, its only a matter of time (maybe 30 years...who knows?) before the US football team manages an even more immpressive run than Korea-Japan.

No the US will never develope a world class player who os striclty born and raised in the US and will never do anything in the World Cup for one simple fact. Soccer in the 7th or 8th choice for sports kids play when their young and continue to play as they grow. All of the best athletes from this country play football, basketball, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, nascar, even wrestling before they play soccer. While in the rest of the world soccer is 1st or 2nd. Imagine if in the US people like Devin Hester played soccer on the wing or what a center back LeBron James would make. But our best athletes focus on other sports so the US will never develope a great soccer talent remember Adu was originally from Ghana wear soccer is the most popular sport. Altidore will eventullay become the next Landon Donovan or Brian McBride he may have some succeess over in Eupore but will never be his teams best player as long as he plays in a top teir league.
