How, When and Where can I donate my eyes?

Can a person with Myopia donate eyes?

  • Can any person with eye illness such as myopia, hypermetropia and others donate eyes after death? Please state all cases in which a person cannot donate his eyes.

  • Answer:

Eye donation actually means cornea donation. Conditions like Myopia and Hypermetropia are refractive errors. If these are corrected using spectacles and cornea is otherwise healthy (see below), then there shouldn't be any problem. However since 1990s LASIKĀ  (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) is being used for correction which affects structural integrity of cornea making it suitable for only posterior lamellar transplant surgery, but yes can still be donated. Anyone with the following medical conditions is not fit for eye donation (in brief): [1] Active viral Hepatitis Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or HIV Active viral encephalitis or encephalitis of unknown origin Creutzfeldt - Jakob Disease Rabies Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis Active septicemia (bacteremia, fungemia, viremia) Retinoblastoma Laser photo ablation surgery (see above) Leukemia and Lymphoma For a much more detailed list kindly see "Medical Suitability for Eye/Corneal Donation (pdf)" at http://www.cera.org.au/uploads/lcds_Suitability.pdf%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%8E References: [1] http://www.netradaan.com/contraindications-eye-donation.phpThis answer is not a substitute for professional medical advic...
