What are the exact benefits of studying abroad in high school?
-
Specifically, what are the benefits, if any, of studying abroad during the junior year of high school as far as higher education opportunities? How useful is a study abroad program to a student like me, who is wanting to do everything they can to increase their chances for a better post-secondary education? If it matters, I am from America and am looking at mostly European countries that do not have a language requirement; namely, the Netherlands.

The benefits of studying abroad are endless. My daughter who is 16 spent last semester is Valencia , Spain. She came back to the States a very different girl. Much more mature, independent, out going , confident in her abilities and capabilities of taking on difficult situations when she had to. And she was speaking Spanish.Studying abroad is not always a walk in the park, it has its challenges which you have to be up for. You live with a host family whom you have never met, you eat food which may or may not be to your liking, you attend school without all your friends and you have to make all new friends which takes time. So therefore there is a lot of alone time in the beginning. You will experience culture shock as you immerse yourself in their countries culture. You learn how to problem solve things that you never knew even existed. You learn to manage your homesickness for your family , friends and all that is familiar.Yet all the while everything is new and exciting every day. You are meeting other exchange students from across the globe that you will become friends with because they are in the same boat with you. You will explore, sightsee , go on adventures, travel, the city that you are in, the country that you are in and hopefully some other countries. You will learn to make friends in your new school , take classes in a foreign school and take direction and get support from your host family and perhaps siblings. As colleges look at your transcript they will realize what kind of a person you are. You are a go getter , an adventurer, someone who is worldly and has already been away from home and succeeded. It will make college that much easier because you have already had the experience of separating from home and you will be able to focus on your studies. It's an invaluable learning experience in so many ways. I'm sure you would love the experience. My daughter went thru CIEE in Portland ME and international study abroad organization. Google them and check out their programs. Have fun!
