The best place near the Vatican, is several stops away by sub way. The Vatican, while it is nice and a cool place to visit, it is extremely LOUD. I could not sleep at all in to hotel i stayed in, the crowds were horrible. You will want to get a subway map of Rome, then compare the location of the Vatican to where a possible hotel is. Do not get at hotel in the suburbs at any price, it's full of prostitutes and drugs

I would suggest using this tour on the first day you arrive so you can get an overview of the city and try to get your bearings. You can buy the tickets at Termini station.
