By boat! Just been in Naples once(I'm Italian but) but I know the coast well enaugh and I'm sure you'll find a number of ferry boats to move among islands and towns. When you're in Naples go to the harbour and ask.

I would not rent a car, Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Capri are all very close and easily accessible by public transportation. The circumvesuviana is a commuter rail that goes from Naples to Sorrento. Take that to get to Pompeii (there is a Pompeii stop) it only takes about 20-30 minutes and lets you off right outside the gate. Figure 3-4 hours to cover Pompeii. On the way back, stop at the Ercolono station. When you get out of the station, to your left there are generally vans that will take you up to Mount Vesuvius for around 5-10 euro, including admission. You then have time to climb to the top. Beware, the path is steep and winding and covered in pebbles, so wear good, closed walking shoes. There is also a public bus, but it takes longer and the driver won't wait for you, and it is about the same price. The whole thing takes about an hour. When you return to the station, go straight down the hill to the bottom and you will find Herculaneum. It tends to be less crowded and better preserved than Pompeii, although much smaller. You can get a ticket that covers both Pompeii and Herculaneum. You can cover Herculaneum in 30-60 minutes. There is not a lot to do in Naples itself. There is an archeological museum, which is interesting and contains a lot of the artifacts pulled from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Otherwise, no reason to spend more than a day in Naples. I have not been to Capri, but it tends to be very expensive. You can catch a ferry over from Naples. Probably a couple of days there would be fine. Depends on what you want to do. I have done the Pompeii and Vesuvius trip twice, once by myself and once with my wife. I had no problems speaking only a little Italian. I highly recommend getting a good guide of Pompeii before you go so you can pick out the things that are most interesting. They have audio guides at the gate as well. You may consider staying in Sorrento instead of Naples. You can just take the circumvesuviano around, it takes an hour and change from Naples. If money is not an object, consider the Hilton Sorrento Palace. It was really quite awesome, with fabulous views of the Amalfi Coast and the best breakfast buffett I've ever had. The circumvesuviano may not be the nicest train, but it is cheap and incredibly convenient.
