  • Answer:

hitchhike would be the cheapest. That is 175 miles, you could walk it in a few weeks. Take the train. From the reference below: Take the train to Salerno. SITA buses leave every hour from there for Amalfi. There's a cafe in the station where you can kill time, if you need to. There is an external luggage compartment by the front door of the bus and the driver will likely insist that you use it. Amalfi is the last stop on the route, so you won't have to worry about knowing when to get off. You'll have to buy a bus ticket in the station first - look for the tourist information office, as they sell them.

Take a train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. Trains from Rome to Naples; pricing is approximate in USD: AV Train, $60 (70 min) / IC Train, $30 (120 min) / EXP Train, $22 (150 min) Then once you get to Napoli, then you can catch a Shuttle Bus to Amalfi via the SITA bus service. According to the Lonely Planet website, the SITA Bus, runs buses from Naples to Sorrento (€3.20, one hour 20 minutes, twice daily), Positano (€3.20, two hours, twice daily), and Amalfi (€3.20, two hours, six daily). OR you can take the Circumvesuviana Train from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento Station, then catch a Shuttle Bus to Amalfi from just outside Sorrento Station. Beware of traveling on the Circumvesuviana Train in the evening; it can be unsafe.

I think that buses in Italy are generally cheaper and more reliable, and if you're comparing a regular train to a bus then they're faster too. It's 15 euro to get to Napoli, for example, using SENA bus company. For about the same price you can go directly to Sorrento or Almafi (which is an actual town) using marozzivt.it. I am not sure if you can navigate that website in English. You can order your tickets online, and since you're going in August I would recommend that because everyone has off in August and is traveling. But you can also get tickets for any bus around major bus stations. Italians are generally really friendly and willing to help. However you'll be in Rome and the people there are probably sick of tourists or want to make money off of them. Get help away from really touristy areas.
