The italian transportation system is very sufficent espicially for travelling across the country. However it all depends on how much you want to spend. There is a train avaliable to take you around Italy, which is faster than the others and it will get you where you need to go. The motor coaches are also very good, clean and have a toilet onboard. I suggest that you take more than one day as it would be to difficult and rushed to see all the touristy things that are in demand. I suggest you take the train to the bigger cities, as it is quick, fast and reliable.

You can take a Eurostar train. That will get you to Florence or Naples in about 1 1/2 hrs. It will cost about 45 euro 1 way, but if you like to be comfortable than you will be. They are cool and clean with bathrooms etc. The scenery by train is beautiful.

Naples is over 2 hours away by train, Pompeii is even further, and Tuscany completely in the other direction. Why don't you invest in a good travel guide and do a little reading and research and see what's closer to Rome?

well , From Rome.......a fine day trip. if you leave early enough, would be to head to Florence, and just walk around Florence for the day. If you are really ambitious.......you could head out to Pisa from there, only about 45 minutes away, by train, and Pisa is really a day trip. You see the Piazza dei Miracle,....the leaning tower, and that's pretty much it. Not alot of reason to hang around Pisa, once you've seen the tower. It's basically a cool photo op..........unless you have tickets to actually climb it which you need to purchase WELL in advance.......and they give you a very specific day and TIME to be there. They only let in groups of 20 or so at a time. Going the other way.......head down to Naples.......and either check out Pompeii, or take the ferry out to Capri and do the Blue Grotto thing, which really is spectacular.....when the sun hits it just right......which is like around 5 pm in the summer..........just awesome.
