Vatican or Rome? It's like saying Manhattan or New York... If you go to Rome, you will see the Vatican too.

The Vatican city is IN Rome

Vatican City is located in Rome, so you need to visit Rome in order to visit Vatican City. In addition, the only places a tourist can visit in Vatican City are the Vatican Museums, the Vatican Garden, and St Peter's Basilica - you cannot go anywhere else. There is no accommodation in Vatican City so you will need to find an hotel in Rome. Have a look at a map of Rome!

The Vatican city is IN Rome, hon. If you have a few days, you could easily do both. However, if you're planning on seeing the Vatican art collection, and you haven't already booked your ticket, you'd want to get in line at about 5 in the morning if you want to get inside before 11 am - when I visited Rome a few years ago, in May, it took me 20 minutes to walk from the end of the queue to the door where they admitted people, so it was a mile long at 11 am. I didn't join it, wasn't bothered waiting in the sun, and quite frankly was a little creeped out by the Vatican generally - it's not what you'd call a welcoming place. But absolutely see the ancient Roman ruins and buildings, they are well worth it. Make sure to see the Roman Forum and the Colosseum (Get your ticket for the Colosseum up at the Roman Forum, buy a two-in-one and you can skip the queues at the Colosseum) and just walk around some of the hills, there's a lovely viewing platform on Aventine hill that I heartily recommend.

If you can stay two days both. One day in Vatican City: morning Musei Vaticani, and afternoon Basilica di San Pietro - or vice versa, attention on Wednesdays morning there it is the Pope audience on San Pietro square. One day Rome: The ancient Rome from Colosseo through the Fori imperiali and Palatino to the Campidoglio (this way, not vice versa) and in the afternoon the central part of the Monumental Baroc town in the afternoon: Pantheon Piazza Navona, Montecitorio, Fontana di Trevi, Spanish steeps. If you have just one day you can choose what you prefer, or just one half and another

Go to both- The Vatican City is in Rome so it kind of goes hand in hand.

You don't have to much of a problem there...the Vatican City is in Rome. But if your going to focus on one spot more than the other, I would go to the Vatican City.
