Yes you can walk... I took the bus to the main station in Venice and from there I walked all over the place.. To St.Mark's square.. Be prepared to get lost at times, it is fun though.. Wear comfortable shoes!! You can buy a small tourist map for like 5 euros.. Venice is truly beautiful, take a lot of pictures! Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

you'll have a problem even getting to Venice if you dont like boats ! It's partof the whole venetian experience getting everywhere by boat. there are travel passes available from the info desk at the airport that you can use all week, You cant get to any of the other islands like Murano and the Lido without using boats.
