How was Venice built in water?

Why was the city Venice, Itlay built over water?

  • I don't know why it was built out into the water. Please, serious answers only. and it is not the planet VENUS but the city venice, Italy.

  • Answer:

Venice was built on the little islands in the lagoon for protection. The founders of Venice fled there away from Attila the Hun in the 7th centuary. Not only is the city surrounded by water but the lagoon has one vital thing that stops attack from the sea...It is very shallow! You could walk many miles in the lagoon and the water would only reach your knees! Obviously nowadays, channels have been cut (a little like roads) into the lagoon to allow traffic as small as a rowing boat to as large as a cruise ship to pass Venice with ease. If you can find it, there's a tv series called 'Francesco's Venice'. It is by a Venetian Guy and very informative. It tells the history from the beginning to modern times. If I can help anymore just ask... Edit: Sorry Dino... I was just going by what the woman said to us on the boat to Torcello... Maybe she was only talking about them settling on Torcello. Sorry if my dates are wrong :) Her English wasn't that clear lol...Mind you, it was A LOT better than MY Italian LOL...

Venice is not built out into the water, but on a stretch of around 120 very small islands connected by bridges. To Patricia B - Not sure where your information comes from but Venetian houses do not have, and have never had, garages, because it would be impossible to drive cars through the city. What you perceive to be garages are in fact boat sheds and store rooms, and in fact it's been this way for centuries. Venice is no longer considered to be sinking. The main problem is the slowly rising sea level. And there is absolutely no limit on the number of people who can visit Venice!

Cozyuk is basically correct. But Atilla was 5th Century not 7th. Roman Empire broke down and various groups invaded. The Lombard Invasion in 568 had the most lasting impact.

It wasn't build over the water, the whole city started sinking and it still is, they have a lot of regulations on how many people can visit the city in a year. Also, when you are there, you can see houses with their garages half under water but now at days they use it to keep their boats. It's an amazing city, there is boat police, boat buses, boat taxis, etc.
