Answer:
Hotel Bellini is a great hotel! Its very close to the train station as well as in walking distance from all the main attractions including St. Peter's square. Outside the hotel is access to water taxis as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. I also remember not too far down the sidewalk that there was free nightly entertainment. I'm not too sure about the price but I don't remember it being overpriced and i'm pretty sure it included breakfast. Overall it was a very clean hotel in a great location.

We stayed at the Villa delle Palme Hotel (3 stars, but felt like more) on the Lido in January. The tariff was 75 euro for bed and breakfast. The vaporetto ride across to San Marco was great - reinforces the Venice experience. The vaporetto goes every few minutes - not a problem. In fact, you can stay on the vaporetto and go right around the Grand Canal. The hotel was beautiful. We had a car, and the staff helped us park it safely in the grounds. We could climb up to the top of the little tower on the roof. The hotel was a lovely stroll to the wharf. Enchanting would probably be a good word for the hotel. You should go to Murano and see a glass making demonstration; feed the birds in St Marks, visit the Doge Palace, but if you just walk and walk and walk, you will see the most beautiful nooks and crannies which will take your breath away. By the way, the gondola ride was100 euro, or 150 for a "longer" one, We did NOT take up the offer! I am sure that you will love Venice!

I can recommend three hotels. In Venice proper, we've stayed at the Relais Palazzo San Marco. It is just around the corner from St. Mark's Square. Considering its location, it is relatively inexpensive. When we stayed there last year, it was about 170 euros, including breakfast. You can get information at: http://smallandeleganthotels.com/ On the Lido di Venezia, which is about a 10-minute boat ride from St. Mark's Square is a very nice hotel called Villa Albertina. We've stayed there several times. Their website is: http://www.villalbertina.com/en/index.htm Of course, while the hotels on the Lido tend to be less expensive than Venice proper, in January the boat ride could get a bit chilly. Another alternative, if your budget is constrained, is to stay at a hotel in one of the cities outside Venice. The drawback is, of course, that you would need to take a taxi or bus to the main station and then catch of vaporetto to Venice proper. Last year, when we arrived at Venice a day early, we stayed at a nice 3-star hotel called the Hotel Raffaello in Spinea. It was clean and modern. There was a bus-stop outside that takes you to the main station. As I recall, the Hotel Raffaello cost less than $100 per night. Buon viaggio e buona fortuna.
