If British people call 'soccer' 'football' then what do they call 'football'?

  • I'm from America, and I thought of this the other night. So everyone knows that British people call soccer (Americans say soccer) football. What do they call the sport that ...show more

  • Answer:

There are many names for it here. It is, MOSTLY called 'American Football', but it is not uncommon to hear it be called Gridiron, Throwball, Handegg (Yes, Handegg, you read correctly) and even, in rare instances, 'Weak Rugby'. Why should we call our football soccer? We invented and named it football long before Americans invented their game which they call football, hundreds of years before infact. Oh, and we DON'T call 'soccer' 'football' as you say, because for us, the word 'soccer' has no meaning. We call Football football, and American Football American Football. So really, this question head should read; "If British people call 'Football' 'football' then what do they call American/Our 'football"

What Americans call soccer(the game where you kick the ball) is called as football in England, and the rest of the English and French speaking world except for USA, Canada, Australia, etc. In North America, its called as soccer. Here's what it's known as in various countries: Germany - Fußball(fussball) Nederlands - voetbal Spain - fútbol Italy - calcio Talking about the other game which American's call football(the one similar to rugby); it's called as American football or gridron. People who don't like the game refer to it as handegg, throwball, etc. And in my country(India), American football is unheard of, so people call it rugby.

Actually, the term 'soccer' was first used in England. It is a colloquial abreviation of 'Association Football', arising out of the British need to shorten words. In the US, soccer/football was mostly a sport played by girls and very large high schools that had a lot of foreign exchange students. It is now quite popular.
