What tree is this with small red fruits in September?

    I am not enough of an expert on this tree to know it from such a photo... and even if it was one I happened to know, this photo likely doesn't narrow the identification well. As points out,... knowing the location would be hugely helpful! There are likely more nearby and experts living next to the trees as well. The real expert could use? Close up photos of leaves on the stem if possible, showing their shapes Close up of the fruit, both as it hangs on the tree (with a few leaves in the photo) and separately if possible. Close up of the flower Close up of bark. That might be enough to help a person who knows this tree.

I agree with Mexican plum.   The taste varies tremendously from one tree to the next, and sometimes you get a high proportion of fruit that rots exceedingly quickly.  But overall, when you have a good year, this fruit is very versatile.  I make an infused vinegar from it that makes awesome salad dressing.   You can also make a good Asian-style plum sauce.   I've put unflavored sauce into cake.
