    if your travelling Rome why is your camera in the hotel room? Anyways, the hotel isn't responsible for any thing you keep in your room. I'd contact them in case it pops up somewhere, but other then that too bad for you!

In order to claim the camera on your travel insurance you need to report the theft to the police. However, the hotel is not responsible for any valuables that you chose to leave in your room. The policy with hotels around the world is that it's the guests responsibility to look after valuables such as cameras. If you don't want to take the camera with you, then ask the hotel reception to put it in their safe. You claim the camera was stolen in the morning which is when you would most likely be sightseeing, so why wasn't the camera with you. It's your fault for leaving it lying around, not the hotel's. And why didn't you report the theft to the hotel management?
