I lived in Rome for two years and went to school there. I lived in an apartment as do most of the Romans. It was expensive, comparable to NY rents. I bought my food from delis and open air markets like the Campo di Fiore. For paper products it was either the local Spar market, or a bus to a super market like we know in the US. They really do eat Italian, pasta and pizza. The most expensive restaurants are Chinese, the Romans love that stuff. The city is most crowded from Easter to around October. After that, it is quite nice and much less crowded. When I vacation there now, I go in that off season. There is a very good underground metro. The buses are the most used transport, but they are always crowded with a bit of pushing on. Jobs are just like here. Bankers, secretaries, shop clerks, you name it, they need it, people do it.

Most people live in appartments, rents are expensive. They are supermarkets but that's an either recent fact in comparison to other European countries or to North Italy. They are marketplace with fresh vegetables and fruits in each district. People eat mostly pasta and pizza, that's not a cliché. The city is very crowded and the public transport system not very efficient, so people have to use their own car and scooters.
