I can suggest this website http://www.scoobit.com and this page dedicated to Rome hotels in particular http://www.scoobit.com/accommodations-rome-hotels.php I stayed at the third hotel on the left. It was a clean, well located and nicely staffed hotel. Not over-priced. It's a safe site. I book hotels through Scoobit.com frequently. You can book on line and there are no booking fees.

Yes, Venere is a great source and has reviews that you can read as well. Also Trip Advisor can be a good tool. make sure you look for ones with many reviews though, the more you can find out about a place, the better. There is bound to be something negative written about just about any hotel in Italy, like the rooms are small, etc etc, but that is to be expected. Different people have varying conceptions of what is "over-priced". Rome hotel prices vary a lot depending on what's going on when you're there. I live in northern Italy and often go out exploring on the weekends. The site I use for hotels here in Italy is Venere.com http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/ They have listings for about 600 hotels in Rome. One that might be a choice is the Romano - this is a very nice two-star place just across the street from the Forum and a couple of blocks from the Colosseum. It is generally very reasonably priced, highly rated and within walking distance of the major tourist sites. Some other good options which are a bit more expensive include: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/pantheon/hotel_cesari.html near the Pantheon, or http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/trevi_brunnen/hotel_accademia.html and http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/trevi_brunnen/hotel_regno.html near Trevi Fountain.

Accor hotels in Europe are normally well priced and clean. Just google Accor hotels and you can pick Rome. Just so you know though...absolutely book a hotel before you go! It is NOT easy to find something once you are already there...I speak from experience. Stay close to major tourist attractions and you wont find yourself in a bad spot either.

If you check here you can compare prices locations and pictures. They retrieve info from a lot of other database so it usually saves me a lot of time when choosing or booking. The best thing is that you actually see all the distances from all the different points of interests. http://www.prontohotel.com/ita/rome/
