Answer:
I am taking my husband to Rome in May for his 40th birthday and we're staying the Hotel Regno, which looks beautiful online and has good reviews on trip advisor, it is on via del corso, which is very central to all attractions, spanish steps, trevi fountain, colosseum, etc. Not sure the converstion rate into dollars, however, 3 nights plus flights from uk cost under £1,000, which is very good in my opinion considering it's close to everything. Look it up as a starting point for you. Hope this helps

I suggest you to check also the hotel reservation website www.nyceRome.com because they have good maps, so you can easily check the vicinity of accomodations and attractions. Another suggestion is to avoid at any cost to be in Rome the 1st of May because of the beatification of the pope Wojtyla, the city will be really crowded...

Hello, I always book through this webiste:http://www.initalia.it/en/poi/colosseo_6145451.htm I also suggest you to stay in a hotel within walking distance of the Colosseum and Vatican City, and then you'll be pretty close to everything you'll want to see. Good luck and enjoy your holiday!

These are the hotels in Rome I like...http://www.venice-italy-veneto.com/hotel-in-central-rome.html They are not all near the Colosseum but many offer great value and they are all in nice areas of Rome.
The problem is going to be finding something in your price range in May. I like the Romano near the Colosseum - it's a highly rated two star right across the street from the Forum just up the street from the Colosseum. However, while that would be well within your range right now, it will be higher in May. You could extend your search into the Pantheon, Trevi, and Navonna areas and be even more centrally located given you additional choices. Trastavere is another option. You might also consider looking at convent/monastery stays. Those can be an interesting experience and are often, but not always, cheaper accomodations. http://www.monasterystays.com/
