My favorite cozy hotel in Venice is the Hotel Centauro. It is only a two star, but it is so nice! Ask for the suite on the third floor. No elevator, so you have to carry your bags up, but the view is AWESOME and you are close to the Piazza. It's relatively cheap, too. In the morning you get a free Continental breakfast with NICE pastries! I never stayed overnight in Florence, but get a place near the river for a nice view. Watch out for gypsies; they are everywhere and they try to pick your pocket. In Rome, we stayed at the Astoria Garden Hotel. It is older, and the view is not as good, but it's near a school and you get to see the children around. The garden area at breakfast time is very quaint. It is not as centrally located, but I would consider it an okay walk to the Forum. Remember, watch out for pickpockets!!!!

I stayed at the Hotel Madison, right across the street from the Roma Termini train station. It was nicely decorated, close to transportation, and very quiet. It was about 67 Euro a night and had a continental breakfast.

While in Rome I stayed at Hotel La Fenice. Very small and cozy. Probably about 12 bedrooms. The staff is very educated and friendly. I believe the nightly rate is about 110 euro/night. The location is excellent (About 20min walk from the Roman Forum). There's breakfast included (The lady at the front desk even calls your room if you haven't had breakfast, saying that you should have breakfast in order to start the day properly!). In Venice I stayed at Hotel Casanova, which is also at a very good rate (About 100e/night) and VERY close to St. Mark's Square. Venice is very small, however, so most hotels that are advertised as being "10min walk from St. Mark's" will be in a good spot. In Florence I stayed at a hotel near the train station. I don't recall the name of the hotel, but it was VERY good. However, I discourage staying around the station due to the large amount of illegal immigrants that roam it at night. It's quite sketchy.
