Best hotels to stay in Florence, Italy.?

We stayed in Florence April 21st and April 22nd of this year. We were at the Hotel Delle Nazioni. It was a great location, very close to the trains and buses, a walk to the Arno and most of the major attractions. But the shower was the smallest I have ever seen in my life and the bed was like a rock. The staff was great, every one spoke very good English, the breakfast was wonderful every morning, but the shower and the bed were just unbearable. I think the best way to see Florence is by staying in an apartment. Historically I have found Florence hotels to be expensive, over priced and rather low on quality.
