What are points and levels?

You can only spend points asking questions. Accumulating points will get you to higher levels, which up to Level 4 gets you the ability to ask and answer more times per day. After that, besides a few minor things such as being able to vote and email more often, points and levels don't do much other than show your participation on the site.

The points are simply to show how much you participate on the site. The more you are here the more points you may have. Points gain you levels, which gain you privileges on Answers. The main thing gained is the ability to ask, answer, and vote more; although after getting to Level 2 at 250 points you will be able to thumbs-up or thumbs-down (rate) answers and also then you can post "clickable" hyperlinks. They give you 100 points to start with so that you can ask some questions for free. Questions cost 5 points initially, but you get back 3 points if you choose a Best Answer before the question goes to vote; in the long run only costing 2 points. Which is what you get for answering a question, so one could say it costs an answer to ask a question They separate each of us. Our scores indicates where we are in the elite answering line.
