What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

Swollen face from dental abscess. Will it go away with antibiotics?

  • I went to the dentist yesterday with severe pain, and found out i have an abscess. I was prescribed amoxicillin. I woke this morning to find my face has really swollen up, bad. Is ...show more

  • Answer:

After sleeping, the face will ordinarily swell more, since everything pools while laying down. Just being up and walking around will help the swelling reduce. If you have and abscessed tooth, you should be scheduled for a root canal. If it's an abscessed gum, you should be rinsing with warm salt water along with the antibiotics. Either way, a followup appointment with the dentist, though usually after a week.

While it definitely takes time for an abscess to respond to antibiotics, this sounds like it has spread to cellulitis. The treatment for this is also antibiotics, but if it does not respond promptly you may need emergency medical treatment. I strongly disagree with the other dentist about heat versus cold. We were previously taught that heat would increase circulation and help the antibiotics get to the affected area, but it has since been shown that cold is much more beneficial for cellulitis (decreased pain and swelling plus decreased bacterial replication). If the swelling continues to increase since arising (as previously mentioned, swelling does increase at night), definitely see the dentist again or go to an emergency room.

The swelling should subside within a few days of the antibiotic kicking in and clearing up the infection. If you are still swollen bt wednesday i would go back to the dentist and have them prescribe you something different because the antibiotics you are on may not work for you. Something else that you can do to speed up the process is to rinse with warm salt water in the area of the infection and spit it out do this a few times a day and it should speed up the antibiotics a little bit.

you started your antibiotics already right? you need those right away...and yes the swelling will go down (as long as the antibiotic is working/doing what it's supposed to). It's because of the infection, it's getting worse so it's getting more inflammed. Did he give you any pain med? If not take Ibuprofen (advil, motrin, etc.) that will help with the pain and will help with inflammation. If that's not working and you need something stronger, call them, they should be able to call you in some medicine. You can put ice on it too, will help with swelling. Use some frozen veggies in the freezer are the easiest, peas are the best because they really form to your face. Give the antibiotic a few days to work...which they will. If you started yesterday, monday, night, and then your doses today (2 I would guess is what you are doing) then tomorrow. So we got monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, you should be feeling MUCH better by tomorrow because it's had 2 days to get in there and you should definitely be seeing a difference by at least Thursday, and then you should be really good for Friday. It's good that you started Monday becaue that's 5 days on anti-biotics, you'll be almost brand new if not, nothing a little make up cant fix :) (now if it gets worse, OR you have problems breathing [feel like it's going in your throat] call them immediately, THATS an allergic reaction. but, most people do well on amoxicillin). Good luck!!
