My boat has mercruiser components. the throttle wont shift into reverse. what could be the problem?

when shifting into reverse the engine shuts off. i by pass the safety switch but the prop will not engage into reverse. what now?

The intermediate shift cable needs to be replaced. This is normally done at the same time as replacing the bellows and gimbal bearing, about every 5-6 years.

Check your cabling for signs of corrosion, they could be sticking and hanging up the works. PS: I can't agree with shifting the motor by hand... you could lose fingers...
