Apart from the facetious answers given, what caused the Titanic to sink was her design. The design was way ahead of her time but was incomplete. It was not rivets, it was not poor building and it was not poor design. Titanic was designed with sub compartment bulkheads built in. If any two compartments were to flood she could stay afloat, and that was design thinking way ahead of its time. The mistake made was that the vertical sub divisions did not go right up to the main deck level, calculations made at that time showed, in error that they did not need to. Hence as she flooded and went deeper into the water, the water was able to flow over the vertical bulkheads and into the next compartment. This went on till the ship was overwhelmed and sank. The biggest tragedy with Titanic was that the number of lifeboats she should have carried were not available and she sailed short of her life saving capacity on the orders of company officials who sadly perished with the ship.

It was an iceberg, and the fact that it was poorly designed. A modern cruise ship can get penetrated by something and stay afloat because the whole portion that is under water is sectioned off. So if it gets damaged and water gets in, the water can only fill up one 5m^3 (or whatever it is) section. It's such a simple idea it's hard to beieve they skipped over that in a ship intended to carry thousands of people across icy waters.

the 1st answer is SO wrong, when titanic was being built they didn't have enough wielders to place or the rivets in so on the side that the titanic scarped the iceberg the rivets came lose as it was too much pressure and made a big gash in the side of the boat which then filled up all 5 compartments and was too much for the boat to handle, so what really sank the titanic was the builders.

Sailor is basically correct, except that the rivets were faulty, they use a lot of cast iron ones instead of steel, that's why they gave way in the cold. If they had been all steel , they could well have prevented some of the damage that occurred and caused the sinking. Also, the wrong order was given to the helmsman, he was told to turn to starboard, when he really should have turned to port.

Liam..

The titanic crashed into an iceberg and the steel plates were not strong in cold weather so the fractured easily causing it to sink.
