Hey, I'm a man and from Goa, India and I strongly object to the way some people are slandering us! Do try to understand this though...... India is a land of many diverse cultures, traditions, etc. You will find vast differences in various aspects from the north to the south, east to the west. My advice is that a traveller should dress conservatively whichever country they may travel to. The same rule applies to in India. Now If you come down to Goa, you will find a big difference here compared to the rest of India as we have a lot more of a European influence here. (Also the Portuguese were here for 450 years). To all the others.....Please don't tarnish anyone's name until you are absolutely sure!

A friend, of a friend is there at the moment (female and alone) and she is having an amazing time. Just dress conservatively and don't look any of the men in the eye. You need to speak to as many people as possible who have been though - I only know the above through my mate.

no, that is not true. men there are no worse than anywhere else. in fact, there's much less street crime there, much less violence. you certainly won't get mugged or raped there. it all depends on how you carry yourself. if you wear tank tops and shorts in public, people will look upon that as if you were running around in your underwear. that's just the custom there, you should wear long sleeves and long pants at all times in public. if you give money to beggars, others will see it, gather around you, and never leave you alone. if they see that you won't give money away, they will turn elsewhere. people stare, and that's strange for us, but that's just what they do, they mean no harm, some people have not seen many foreigners. men will sometimes try to talk to you, and in the big cities they may even try to touch you, but if you are firm and loud they will go away quickly, they embarrass easily. it's safer for a western woman to travel through india alone than to travel through some western cities alone.

I have seen perverts from US, Canada, Australia and Europe to come to India and go for pedophilic activities and other perversions. Several of them get caught and spend days behind the bars. Once I was trekking in the Sikkim Himalayas, and I met a 50 year old pervert from Quebec, Canada who was travelling that part to try out a "Virgin" as he has never seen a virgin in his life......Another French national, who was surviving in his French Govt. dole......has been caught while busy in bed with the hotel owner lady and then beaten up by the locals...these all I have seen myself... I am well travelled...to US, to UK and Europe, to China....I can tell you stories for each places. Believe me..India is no exception...no special alart is required. It's a wonderful country!!

I've spent a lot of time in India and have not had this experience. However, unless you are in Goa and on the beach then as a woman it is advisible to cover up a bit. No short shorts or vest tops and wear loose fitting cool clothing. Crop trousers and a short sleeve shirt is fine. I have no problem with doing this. It is their culture. I imagine that if a woman tourist in England wandered around town topless they would get a few stares (because it is not in our culture to go topless in public unless it's on a beach) and this is no different really. It's not because the men are perverts, just that they are not used to seeing women in skimpy clothing.

heyy...hu d hell told u that men in India are perverts...every where in d world sumwhere or other u end up findin perverts...just coz of sum1z experience dont generalise indian men..itz not dat u can wear shorts here or slevless tops(m frm delhi nd i wear shorts nd other western dresses)..but none of ur clothes shud be too revealing...ur shorts shudnt be too short or u'll end up gettin stares not only frm guys buh evn gurlz..coz itz not in r culture to wear strapless tops or exceptionally short skirtz..cept for occasionz..so if u come 2 India u'll hav 2 respect itz culture..dat dosnt mean u hav 2 wear sari or salwar kameez(traditional dress) u can wear othr casual stuff like jeans, capriz, knee length skirtz etc..nd avoid goin 2 ny isolated areas coz not only in India but many othr foreign countries as well i've heard often tourist become targets due to their naivity..though mugging is hardly a problem in India..so if travellin alone here(or as a matter of fact nywhere) be firm in ur attitude with nyone..nd i can asure u'll enjoy ur trip to India..blive me one of d most beautiful countries...hope i cud change ur mind bout ma country..wishin u come 2 India

i agree with susie indian men are not perverts , but if they are they tend to doss about nearer town centres, at night, i wouldnt say they are erveted either they are always on one goal to come to uk so dont behold and say they have fallen for you when really they have fallen for your green card some men are really good though and respect whereever you are
