Just to add... The offical taxi drivers have a meter and must diplay a placard inside with rates. When in Rome, if you arrive at the airport or train station, don't take a ride from the people who walk up to you and ask if you need a taxi. They are unofficial/non-licensed - you'll probably be overcharged by them.

I've lived in Italy for over a decade. It's like World Traveller said: tips are neither customary nor expected in Italy. The cabbies make a decent living so you don't have to tip them anything. Be aware that when calling a cab, the meter starts running as soon as the cab sets out to get you, so it will often arrive with several euros on the meter. There are additional charges for bags (even if you put them in the trunk yourself), nighttime travel, Sundays and holidays, and outside of city limits trips. These should all be posted in the cab. In my experience, a lot of cabbies would prefer that you give them exact change and no tip, rather than present them with a high-denomination banknote (50 or 100 euros). Most cabbies are honest, but having a clue about the general direction you're going can help prevent being taken on an expensive sightseeing tour.

easy, dont. If he is a nice guy and gets you there directly without taking you on a wild chase around, throw him a euro or two. An easy thing to do is have a hotel call you a cab, ususaly it is just complimentary. Dont freak out in the cab tho, I almost did when I was in rome over last summer. Never have i seen a car do 55Km in city streets missing other cars by less than a foot. Quite scarry the first time.
