What should I know about mechanical engineering before joining the course?
-
I really like to know to know how every thing works, so I decided to take up mechanical engineering. But is there anything I should know about mechanical engineering before I join it. I mean things like--- don't take mechanical engineering if you don't like________ or if you can't_________ Any thing in syllabus one must give more importance or difficult topics.

Answer:
Don't take mechanical engineering if you don't like math or can't do math! Seriously though, there is a lot of math in Mechanical Engineering. You will often have to wade through all the math just to find something that is real world applicable. Don't get me wrong, I totally find it worth while, but you will have to be proficient to at it to solve most problems. Enjoy!

Here are a few pointers: Join Mechanical Engineering if : 1. You find the chapters on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, Laws of motion, kinetic theory of gases, bulk properties of matter from high school physics interesting. 2.You are fascinated by automobiles, cars, airplanes, space vehicles. 3.You are interested in cool robots, automatic systems (self driving cars for ex.), UAV (Unmanned aerial vehicle) etc. 4.You are motivated or concerned about the energy crisis, want to work in renewable energy sector like solar energy etc. 5. You want to work in defense sector like missiles, military equipment's design etc. These are the few pointers, it can grow very large but I have just listed whatever was coming to my mind. (And whatever I found very interesting) But Mechanical engineering has wide range of applications and you can dig a bit more to finally choose whether you want to join it or not.

Maths is the father and Drawing is tge mother in case of Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is a vast field having so many branches and opportunities. One thing I want to say that you just need an positive attitude to study. The major subject you should know is Maths, it doesn't require a high expertise in Maths, but you should have solid foundation in Maths. There are many options in Mechanical Engineering that will clme ahead of you like Production Planning, Automobile, Power Plants, Automation, Refrigeration Industry, analytical designer. So if you wanna be a mechanical engineer, you will certainly find your PRECIOUS. All the best

You should know that it will be awesome (PS only if you like it and have interest in mechanical engineering)Subjects:PhysicsCalculus Chemistry ( some part of it)If you can then Matlab and programming toolsAll the best. Try to understand the concept, then scoring marks will be very easy. As someone said " God made men and only the finest became mechanical engineers"Cheers

Master Physics and Calculus. These are the roots are your Mechanical knowledge. Mechanical classes I have taken include Dynamics, Fluid Systems, Electrical Systems, Mechanics of Solids, Machine Design, Heat Transfer, etc, and to really understand these topics, you need to master Physics and Calculus. Think about how much sense 2+2=4 makes, (or maybe something a little harder like Pythagorean theorem). Reaching this level of understanding in the concepts of Physics and Calculus makes learning these later Mechanical classes SO much simpler :)

Thanks for the A2A. If you don't like math or physics, don't go into engineering (or any other STEM field); pretty much everything relies on those to some extent. Look up the classes you'd have to take in different schools and see if anything sounds really hard or unpleasant.
