Union Public Service Commission: Why isn't Computer Science & Engineering one of the optional subjects?

  • There are subjects like  Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering, which are equally irrelevant to what an IAS does. Shouldn't the commission consider including more subjects that could expand the gamut of test takers.

    It is just the short-sightedness of the commission in having only some graduation subjects in optionals. Having a limited number of optionals with a graduation level of learning when there are 'n' number of graduation subjects today shows the shortcomings in the pattern of examination which they are trying to rectify without acknowledging the decades old mistake. Any explanation for creating this biased field will be unsatisfactory.

There are many engineering fields, food engineering, paper & pulp, automobile, etc. Why to consider Computer Science special ? UPSC board has selected few basic subjects to be qualified. Engineering got three, civil, electrical & mech. UPSC looks for the depth of study in subject, and not the subject. So for example, even one has done civil engineering can be considered for revenue services. After clearing exams, you have to spend more than 2 years in trainings and you have to clear these trainings. A person who has experiecne in learning a topic well can dwell in subject matter as well. Similarly, you may find a civil engineer in Software field. The relevance comes with experience and ability to adopt with the subject.
