Where is a good place to live in Berlin?
-
I'm thinking of moving to Berlin. I'm 19 years of age and want to live somewhere central and reasonably priced. Somewhere where there's a lot of students would be good.

Answer:
I loved Kreuzberg district when I was a student. If you don't mind a mostly Turkish neighborhood, there are still some cheap flats available. Also, the Wedding district is not as bad as rumor has it. Just make sure you're not too far from the next subway (U-Bahn) station. Everything more than 400 meters walking distance is too far. If you're a student at a university, you can apply for a room in a students' home ("Studentenwohnheim"), but there's a disadvantage: Some of them are as far out as in Berlin-Marzahn, which is really out in the sticks. The advantage is, you will have an apartment of your own with no roommate for a reasonable price. But waiting lists for the good ones are long. You can always find a reasonably priced apartment in Berlin, but some diy experience (wallpapering, painting) is expected. If you don't have it yet, you'll get it. I could do bricks and paint before, but I owe all my plumbing experience to Berlin. And, YES, water is wet. One thing I remember about Berlin: You're never alone. Just talk to your neighbors, and if you need help, ask. They won't let you down.

Generally Berlin is a safe city but like everywhere there are unpleasant parts. I agree with AM. Don't move to Marzahn. It's a bit rough and they don't really like outsiders. It's also nearly an hour's tram ride into the centre Most of the Charlottenburg is ok but not as cheap as the rougher areas. Mitte is popular with Students and is safe. Parts are dingy but that's not surprising considering its history (East Berlin), but you're in walking distance of brighter areas.

AM is absolutely right and for thus who say Berlin is a safe place to be how come that on the "Vorsicht Bürgerkrieg" map this area is bloody red? Avoid Berlin as much as possible. Unfriendly people there a lot of left anarchist burning cars, Muslim immigrants have taken over several suburbs already. Just have a look here:
