Berlin is very spread out and has several christmas markets in various locations. IIRC one of the bigger ones is at Unter den Linden close to the Opera house. I would recommend that you stay close to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn stop within zone A of Berlin public transport system. The Berlin Tourist Information has an online booking service for hotels and appartments, check them out. http://www.berlin.de/international/index.en.php Staying at an appartment is a good idea, btw. Also take a look at private rooms in hostels, they can be good options. I really like the Meininger Hotel and Hostel chain or if you are into art and history, the Ostel (www.ostel.eu) near Ostbahnhof.
