How can I become an art model?

I want to be a nude model for an art class. How do I become one?

  • Do I need to be with an agency? Who should I contact? I am a 26yr old male in the UK, if that helps.

  • Answer:

I am a Fine Arts graduate. There are times when we just have to approach someone from the vicinity if we need a model. Too bad I wasn't able to experience having a nude model. It might be faster if you'll approach a professor or a student (so he/she could tell it to his/her professor). Coz you might go thru a long process if you course it through the administration. Be mindful though that you must make an impression that you are doing it professionally so as to avoid being mistaken for something you are not.

Go into an art gallery that specialises in pictorial realism and tell them that you're interested in doing this, and ask if they know of anyone who needs a model. Do the same with artists' collectives, go to studios, contact the local art college. You could be working within a few days. It's very hard to get models for painters, we just cannot afford the type of prices that magazines etc can. You would probably make a killing if you came to Ireland and did the same.

Offer your services to the local art college, but they are not always seeking 'perfect' people, imperfections make the composition interesting. But you can pose for me personally anytime!!!

I've known several art models. How they got gigs was to speak to the art department especially the Head of the arts department at the local University or TAFE College. Place an advert in an arts magazine. Most art magazines should have a classifieds. Try drawing clubs or painting clubs. Even go to your local art gallery, they should be able to give you contacts or allow you to place an advert on the community board. Good luck.

No, you don't need an agency. They advertise in the papers, on art college notice boards and the like. I wouldn't do it for too long though, it's not terribly good for your posture. If you do, i recommend taking up Pilates, Yoga or Alexander Technique.

Write a spec letter to the heads of the art department of your local college/university.
