It's strange because this was a question I asked my art teacher. She told me that black and white are indeed colors, because of the pigments. Black is the absence of color, and white is all of the colors. They're neutral, if you want the short version.

If you want to get technical about it, white is not really a color. It is the absence of color in a fully lighted schema. (And contrary to popular conception, black is NOT the presence of ALL colors. It is also the lack of color, only in the absence of light or the ability to reflect light.)
