Answer:
Many companies will scan the resumes and run it through Optical Character Recognition software, which will read the content, looking for key words that the employer enters. For example, if a degree or level of education is important for the job, the OCR application will look for the words that indicates that education. (high school graduate, MBA, BA, AA, PhD, etc.) If it is a set of specific skills or experience, it will look for words that apply.( machinist, food server, data entry, etc) If the job needs a kind of training or experience, it will seek out words that apply (Photoshop, Illustrator, Excel, fire safety, medical lab technician) Because of the limitations in the scanning software, a resume should make it easy for the keywords to be found. The, classic, Times New Roman font is one of the easiest for the English reader to recognize, so, the software is programed to read this font. A good quality print, in a font no smaller that 12 points is essential. Remember, that a human being will not get to the resume until AFTER the scanner processes it. The resumes with the most matches will go to the "top of the pile." The rest go to the bottom, unless they are discarded outright for no applicable matches. If the scanner cannot recognize the words, they do not count. One more point. Some software does not "like" a solid, horizontal line, so, avoid them.

I would try to browse through premade resume templates for really nice looking resumes that have professional looking premade fonts, samples, and ideas.. I had the same problem and then I made my resume using a resume template I found on http://www.fontmarketplace.com/font/ascender-resume-kit.aspx I received more calls from jobs I applied to because I guess my resume looked more professional and it stood out. Also using a different color paper other than white also helped.

10 or 12 font, Times New Roman
Experto Credo
It's best to keep it traditional - 12 pt Times New Roman. Try to get too fancy or unique and you'll just end up looking unprofessional or immature. Too small of a font, and no one will want to squint to read everything. Too large, and it looks like you're overcompensating for the lack of quantity you have on there.
