Software salary in India after working 15 years in US?

Is M.E CS from BITS Pilani a worthy option for a NITian with 2 years of Software development experience?

  • I have done ECE from a top-ranked NIT and I have been working as a software developer for 2 years now with a above-average salary. I want to get back to academics to: 1. Probe the breadth of computer science since my UG was in ECE 2. Get an additional degree 3. Just for the fun of being a student again Is ME CS from BITS a worthy option for me? If I continue working in the industry for another 2 years, my annual package might be from 12-15 LPA. Is it possible to get a better package after finishing ME from BITS? I am not quite sure about doing Ph.D. So let's assume I will get back to industry after finishing ME. Also please suggest any other options for PG in India. I am not writing GATE this year. So IITs or IISc not in radar for now.

Thanks for the A2A!! To answer this question, we need to delve into the various possibilities and where your interests lie and mainly, what you expect out of the M.E program. So I will try my best to answer this question. Firstly, you should know that an ECE candidate CANNOT join the M.E CS program. You can join the M.E SS program though. This program is specially for students from non CS backgrounds who are interested in a field switch into the IT realm. The courses offered in SS help in the creating a foundation for non CS students. You can catch up with the CS students, but you will need to put in the effort as well. You can choose electives which are offered to CS students based on interest and availability. Before we begin, i would like you to read another Quora answer of mine. This answer will give you a look into the M.E CS/SS life in BITS. The student life is very wholesome and is very different and I think very few colleges in India gives its students this much of freedom, responsibility and diversity all at the same time. I am sure it will be an enriching and memorable student life experience. Job You had posted in the question that if you had worked in the industry for another 2 years, then your package will be 12-15 LPA. This is pretty good considering the Indian market scenario. But if you want to top that, there are ample opportunities in BITS. CS/SS placements are pretty good. There are many companies giving a package in the range 12 LPA to 30 LPA in India and many jobs abroad too which offer a package from $100,000 to $240,000.  Also, its not the package that matters. Even the job description matters and the profiles offered here are also pretty good. But it goes without saying that the competition in a college like BITS is fierce and you would have to work hard for those jobs. Now, its obvious that job and package you land is in your hands. And with your experience and your previous college name, I am sure you will have a plus point in your resume. The placement procedure for the companies wont change much, be it BITS, NIT or IIT. So it will be easier as you will be familiar with it to a certain extent. Then again comes few rules which BITS puts on the students during placement season. These rules vary based on college. The difference in placements of BITS and the top IITs is not too much and hence in terms of placements, you can consider BITS as an option you wont regret provided you work little hard to prepare for placements. Research Even though you are not currently interested in doing a Ph.D, doing M.E  in BITS does have its advantages. There are various interesting projects that are currently going on in BITS, in which you can participate. If you maintain a CGPA of 8.5 and above, you can opt for a direct vertical transfer to the Ph.D program in BITS Pilani. Hence, by the end of 2 years, if you change your mind on research, then you can consider BITS as an option too. Also, BITS has many tie ups with foreign universities. Hence you can apply for the student transfer programs and broaden your knowledge. If you are going to do a Ph.D abroad, the BITS tag will have some weightage even though the reputation of BITS is not at par with the top IITs. Hence, It will come down to the amount of work done during your M.E. Also, during placements, you will get offers for joining as faculty in other colleges. This was something really cool according to me and it definitely opens up a whole new area into which you can enter, if you choose to. Other Options Apart from IITs, IISc and BITS, I would consider IIIT H to be a good college to pursue your Masters. Its gaining reputatuon very quickly as a college for producing very good coders. But I am not sure if they accept candidates from an ECE background for a CS course. I think you will have to look into the admission criteria. Hope my answer was helpful. If i have missed anything or didn't answer your question properly, kindly leave a comment or PM me for more details. I will try my best to rectify any mistakes or get into more detail if needed.
