Maths97 clearly does not realise what is involved for American applicants, and Aladom is an employment agency that recruits home helps and various employees in France, but does not deal with non- Europeans or Au Pairs from America that require special visas, etc....As Wise says, the arrangements for Au Pairs form the UK are entirely different, and it is quite possible that some families are willing to take on a person that speaks very little French for the purpose of teaching the children English and, in that case, they interview British girls to find which one has the best English Received Accent. There may be also American families who look for girls from home but they will not go through a French agency. Obviously if you have very little French you will have to improve on it before you go. Having a driver's licence also is good if you choose a place that is not in a busy town, as you may be asked to drive. You do NOT have to have special qualifications to be an Au Pair, only if you are a Nanny in charge of tiny children.

If you want to be au pair you need to learn French because if you gonna work with small children they won't understand you! You also need to know where you want to work in Paris or another city. I know this agency my mom took for me and my brother! This agency's called Aladom. You can be lucky and find a family who wants you to speak english with their children ( what my mom did). You can go on the web side if you want and you can choose the city you want to work in. but don't forget that you need diplomas because you'll probably have a meeting with the parents to see if you good for the job, I remember when I was small you had 5 baby sitter who came at home to have an interview with my parents, it's not difficult but you need to prove that you're the best and that you can speak well French. And don't forget that you also need a visa if you want to to stay in France for a long time. http://www.aladom.fr/ Bonne chance!!!
