  • Answer:

To go to Amboise you catch the train at Gare d' Austerlitz .The journey takes two hours. Alternatively you can go to Amboise via Tours from gare Montparnasse. There are buses that go from Amboise to Chenonceau. For buses and a selection of hotels etc.. see the Amboise Tourist office website. I was interrupted by a phone call as I started typing this and see, after posting my answer, that my good friend Jean-Michel has already answered your question. He is the great travel expert, and normally I would erase my answer in tribute to his knowledge. However I am surprised he considers going to Amboise negligible. The castle is very fine, with a unique indoor staircase for riders, and has a fascinating history as a horrible massacre took place there. Clos Lucé where Leonardo da Vinci resided, down the road, is also very interesting and the walk from one to the other is easy, ten minutes at the most. Of course Chenonceau and Chambord are much superior, but you may have a specific reason to have asked about how to get to Amboise from Paris. I have stayed at Laboureur et Chateau in Chenonceau several times. It is expensive but the food is delicious and the service pleasant. Bedrooms vary. Those in the annexe are cheaper, less luxurious, and guests from English speaking countries tend to be somewhat segregated. Other than the castle these days, there is nothing in the village. It used to be full of antique shops , but they have all gone. If you miss the bus you are stranded, so reservation is essential if you decide to stay there. By car it is a doddle: we did Chenonceau-Amboise in fifteen minutes flat when my absent minded husband had left his coat in the restaurant where we ate lunch. So if you were stranded you could take a taxi.

Considering that 80% of Château Amboise was destroyed during the Revolution, what little remains is overshadowed by properties of much greater interest. For example: Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry (particularly the gardens), or Cheverny - one of the few fully furnished château in the Valley. While the small models of daVinci's inventions are interesting at le Clos Lucé, there is nothing of his that remains and if I only had two days to visit the Loire Valley, I would skip Amboise completely with no hesitation. While there may be tour companies willing to take you to Chenonceau form Amboise, the only public transportation is by rail via Tours. For those visiting the Loire Valley with limited time and no car, they should consider either the TGV from Montparnasse to Tours or the TER trains to Blois from Austerlitz. There are tour packages from either of these locations offered by the local Office de Tourismes and some can include hotel. http://www.bloispaysdechambord.com/ http://www.ligeris.com/ Considering the distance between Chambord and Chenonceau, you might consider a car and driver which can give you a personalized tour of precisely your areas of interest: http://www.leisure-tours.com/
