You could visit Omaha Beach then go on to Pontorson which is on the mainland opposite Mont St Michel. Pontorson has plenty of accommodation, and is much cheaper than staying on the island. It's about 9 kms inland from Mont St Michel, but the train stops here and there is a regular bus service to the island.
