    Bastille Day is the 14th of July and commemorates the storming of the Bastille in Paris. The Bastille was a massive prison but it isn't as big a deal as at first sight as there were only 6 or 7 prisoners in there at the time. It is celebrated because the storming of the Bastille was seen as a pivotal point in the French Revolution which overthrew the French monarchy and paved the way for France to be a much more equal society. It is a public holiday and lots of towns have big fireworks displays in the evening.

At the start of the French Revolution, the peasant mobs stormed the Bastille prison and released the convicts held there. It was the first major act of rebellion and so is always celebrated on 14 July. Much the same way that in the UK we celebrate Guy Fawkes night in November.
