Metropolitan France is the "European" part of France I described at the beginning.

In case you are not, an interesting piece of trivia: in years past when there was a military draft in France, you could serve fewer years in total by agreeing to be stationed in French Guiana-- very hot, full of insects and lonely bc it's in S. America, far from metropolitan France.
