Answer:
Not saying 'bonjour' when you meet someone. You can get a very pointed 'bonjour' in answer to your query. Especially with older people. Don't talk about how much money your parent earn or ask (secret) or preach about religion (private). Politics are a free for all as long as you don't insult the other's country in rude terms. Be careful, we like a lively discussion that can be taken for a violent attack by a foreigner when we are only waiting for you to slug back with rhetoric and humour. It's supposed to be fun. As an American you can be targeted for that game, don't be upset, that's not the goal of the game, be ready to explain things like the states independence in things like laws, taxes etc and the political system of the USA to people used to monolothic government and country... As said above, keep your voice low. US tourists can be heard a mile away. At least. :D In a discussion we usually play ping pong conversation, we change subject quickly and don't come back on previous subjects. Going on and on and on about a single subject is a no. Kissing for real when saying bonjour, we usually air kiss. Touch cheek to cheek and smack, smack. I usually recommend "French or Foe" from Polly Plat to my US colleagues coming to France. Though it is a bit out of date on customs it is still current in explaining French mindset. Or you can have a look at this site: http://www.understandfrance.org/ Have a very nice trip
