Can I drive using a US drivers license in France?
-
Or do I need an international drivers license? Also, are there GPS that speaks English while driving on French roads in France? Thanks!!!

Answer:
You don't need an international driver's license in France unless you're staying longer than 90 days. If you're staying less than 90 days, your US driver's license will be fine. Take a look at the website for the US Embassy in France: http://france.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/rennes-driving.pdf Also see the website for the French Embassy in Washington: http://ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?article376 Don't know about the GPS, but my Garmin has various language settings (including French and English), so I'll bet the same is true over there.

A couple of additional points. Yes parking in Paris is expensive - but that's if you can actually find anywhere to park! Most French people find it cheaper to take the risk of getting a parking fine than actually paying the fees. I don't know how that will work with a hire car. Bear in mind if you don't pay the fines yourself within a few days, a reminder ticket will be sent to the car-rental company costing between two and three times the original fine. Another point - most cars in France do not have automatic transmission. Expect only the high end models at the rental company to be automatic. Oh, and Parisians find driving in Manhattan rather tame!

The GPS is programmable...Ours (we were in Spain) was handed to us speaking in something like Lithuanian! (check before you leave the desk...and have someone help you program it. And YES it is worth paying the extra for!) I was told I didn't really need an international license, but I got it anyway. and, (again, this was Spain, but it's all EU - check with the AAA) when I WAS stopped by the police, they couldn't decide what to do about it, and needed my US license, and even THEN there was some logistical problem...they finally took 100€ and helped us on our way! All the international license does, is tells them WHAT class of license you have in the US, and does it in multiple languages. All YOU have to do, is pay the ten dollars, and hand them an extra passport photo...and they make it right while you are standing there. No big deal. Wait! WHY are you getting a car? For the most part, public transportatioin can get you anywhere, quickly, neatly, efficiently, and without having to figure out their parking! Are you REALLY sure? You don't actually think you are going to DRIVE in Paris, or something stupid like that, do you? Even the natives don't drive! Best advice: Use the car to do day trips, or to drive in the country...but as soon as you hit the city, find a car park near a metro station, and leave it there...btw, parking is, like, 40€ a day.

You will need to have an international drivers permit as well as your regular drivers license. you can get one in the U.S. at any AAA office. See first site below to verify that you need the international permit. As to the English speaking Gps, see 2nd site, it gives rental companies that operate in France. You could call and ask. When i had a rental car in Canada, the GPS in the car could be set to either English or French.

you NEED an international drivers license. you need to check with the car. if you are renting a car in france, most will have a gps and it will come in an english version.
