How would I describe my grandaddys brother? Would he be my great Uncle? Grand Uncle?

Answer:
Either is correct. I prefer Grand, because when you get further back it makes it clearer. Your 4th great grandfather's brother is either your 5th great uncle or your 4th great grand uncle: great great great great great uncle great great great great grand uncle Saying "4th great grand uncle" is, to me, clearer; you know immediately he was the 4th great grandfather's brother.

Apparently, either term is appropriate according to the Rootsweb link below: "Your great uncle (or grand uncle) is the brother of your grandfather or grandmother" (Defining cousins, n. d., Rootsweb.ancestry.com). A link on my Ancestry.com pedigree chart, however, notes that my grandfather's brothers are my "grand uncles". Nevertheless, when I was growing up in Texas, both sides of my family always referred to my granddaddy's brothers as my great uncles while any sisters of a grandparent were great aunts.

Marci is correct; he is a grand-uncle. "Great" is usually used to describe ancestral relations of people who preceded your "Grand" generation (who in turn were the parents of one's parents.) It is only valid when used with the term "Great-Grand." Since this Uncle was the brother of a grand-parent, he would be a grand-uncle. If he was the uncle of your grand-parent, he would be a 1st great-grand uncle. When I was growing up, the sisters of my grandmother were called my Great Aunts. Since then I have also seen them called Grand Aunts or Uncles. The terms are interchangeable.

You Grandfathers Brother is your Great Uncle in the US, but I have been told it would be Grand Uncle in the UK and parts of Europe.

That depends on what your family say.....both are correct......I have always said Great Uncle............

the above 3 are correct and I might add I really love the term "granddaddy." That was what my older sister's children called my father and I felt it sounded so affectionate.
