Medieval Europe Cooks?

How similar is life for a normal man in Westeros (and Essos) compared to medieval Europe?

  • A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of thrones) is set in a world inspired by medieval Europe. Being a fantasy it does have dragons, magic etc. But it doesn't seem that they would have concerned the common man as much as the Lord. I want to know how life was for the normal man in GOT compared to medieval Europe . Was it more brutal or better, more fair or worse? What about when compared to other ancient lands like Indian, China and Japan?

  • Answer:

Assuming there are no dragons or White Walkers attacking, I can't imagine the life of a Westerosi commoner is any different from that of a commoner in medieval Europe. The biggest difference would be the variable-length seasons, which would alter the planting and harvesting schedules of farmers considerably.

Very much based on Western Europe.  Indian, China and Japan were more sophistocated at the time.   There's an interesting series of books called "Everyday life in....", for various places.  Look it up on Amazon Books if you'd like to know more.
