Birthday cake in Paris?

  • I am going to Paris with my best friend at the end of August and want to pre-order her a Birthday cake. I could just make her one and bring it on the plane but a) I'm worried it ...show more

Just to confirm what voicefromparis said - in Paris it's much more common for people to buy a cake to have as a dessert, so virtually all bakers are also patisseries and sell cakes. When Parisians want a birthday cake they usually just buy one of these cakes, and put a candle/sparkler on it, and maybe a little "happy birthday" motto. You can certainly order a cake in advance from a patisserie, but people generally do this to ensure that they get the exact size/flavour of cake they want. Assuming you identify a patisserie to use, you still won't actually know what the different cakes are like (remember these are more like desserts, they're not just a sponge cake with vanilla frosting or whatever), so it's going to be really difficult to choose one without actually seeing them. My advice would be to wait until you arrive, and then go to the patisserie and choose one. Most patisseries make either small versions or slices of their cakes, which means you can even taste it. If you don't want to leave it until you get there I think that the suggestion of asking your hotel to organise it is probably best.

I know this doesn't answer the question but birthday cakes in France are not the same as elsewhere. They are not the cakey frosted type like in the US or England. You would have to find something to your liking. Perhaps you could call Rose Bakery in the 2nd arrondissement. They may make something like this.

Same as Graham and VoicefromParis. I'd say your best bet would be to research a bit from here, to have an idea what you're looking for, and then when you get there, look at the windows, pick one you think looks good, and order one. If you go in google.fr and do an image search, you'll understand. You could do a general search for patisserie. A few names of common cakes in French patisseries, to search in google.fr : St Honoré Paris-Brest Foret Noire Fraisier or Framboisier Savarin There are various tartes available (shortcrust pastry with fruit on top) and fruit flavoured mousses. Check out the ingredients from here, easier for the language ! Some have alcohol, so if you don't like it, you might want to say : "j'aimerais un gateau SANS ALCOOL s'il-vous-plait" the day you go and order it. (because alcohol help preserve the cakes, some patisseries tend to stick it in to lots of their cakes). If you see a recipe you're interested in in a general "patisserie" site, do an image search straight after, and see what the cake looks like according to different people, and how common it is depending on the number of results.
