I live in Paris. I've got friends that come to Paris every year and they always stay at the Hotel d'Albion, on the 8th district, safe, central and smart. Walking distance to the Champs Élysées. I have seen some of the rooms, they're nice (though tiny) and my friends are happy with this hotel. http://www.hotelalbion.net/ Otherwise, I'd vote for the hotel Nikita's friends recommend, Astruc, on the 17th district, near the Monceau Parc, it's one of the most exclusive areas of Paris, safe and although it is not as central as the 8th district, it's easy to go to monuments and museums from there. You won't see many tourists in the 17th district, mostly Parisian families. http://www.astrucelyseesparishotel.com/location.html If you're looking for a safe and nice area, don't go around Pigalle, St Ouen, Porte de Clignancourt, I don't think it's really dangerous but I don't consider it nice, with drug dealers, drug people, sex shops and other things like that. Montmartre is nice to go for a walk, visit Sacre Coeur and Place du Tertre, apart from that, there's no interest and it's not central. I think that the best, for a tourist, is to stay at a hotel near where most of the museums are, Saint Germain DES Pres area (75006), also Latin Quarter 75005 (but it's always crowded), 75007 is nice, safe and central. Le Marais is nice, 75004 but loads of people around all the time, the same happens on 75001. On tripadvisor I saw positive clients reviews about Hotel du Champ de Mars, it seems fine though I think there's no lift. Look on http://www.tripadvisor.com/ to see more hotels, clients reviews, pictures, prices.

I normally stay at the Hotel du Brasil. It is off ST. Michel near the metro (Luxembourg). An Austrian psychologist owned the house once. Can't think of his name. The rate is less than $100/night. The rooms are not large, but adequate. Plenty of hot water. Location, location, location. Easy off to CGD.

Hotel Damremont in a quiet residential area of the Montmartre is a nice, cheaper hotel I know. It is fairly close to the Sacre Coeur and Moulin Rouge, but otherwise not very central. There is good metro access to different parts of town. http://damremont-paris-hotel.com/ I haven't actually stayed at Hotel Astruc Elysees, it was suggested by a friend, but I would consider it. It is located around the Arc de Triomphe end of the Champs Elysees, in a green, elegant neighborhood. Very reasonably priced, should be within your budget. http://www.astrucelyseesparishotel.com/

We like to stay in Montmartre, Pigalle or Opera. Our favourite hotel is the Royal Fromentin. Although it is in Pigalle we have always felt safe. It is a lovely hotel. It was once a cabaret and the decor is turn of the century. It is a romantic hotel. If you look at www.booking.com you can choose hotels by location, price and number of stars. Crucially, people who use the service can leave reveiws, so you can see what is happening with the hotel recently. Enjoy your visit.
