Answer:
Yes, within the city limits of Paris, there is only one big skyscraper. That is in the Montparnasse sector. After the construction of that building it was decided not to permit the building of tall skyscrapers in the city of Paris. What did occur was the development of the sector called La Defense. It is across the Seine river and outside of Paris. Actually only one stop on the metro away. Quite close to the Eiffel Tower and many famous attractions. At La Defense, there are many, many very tall ultra modern buldlings, offices, hotels etc. The area is different than New York. Not better or worse, just different. Wikipedia has all kinds of photos of La Defense, There are crowds of people in Paris, especially on the metro. Some of the metro (subway) stations are huge. In fact one is the largest in the world. I am originally from New York, but I feel much more comfortable walking around Paris. There are certain aspects that IMHO are quite similar especially with regards to food. In both cities one can find restaurants and shops from every country on the face of the earth. Paris, is not a very large city. Has just over 2 million inhabitants. Another 10 million live in the suburbs and towns outside the city limits. To some this is like New York, where so much is concentrated in the really small.Manhattan island. Yes when in Paris, you do realize that you are in a BIG city but it is extremely liveable.

It's a huge city, for a visitor it's great but for the 13 million locals it's a rat race like life anywhere else.
Helloâ„¢
Both Paris and NYC are world class cities and you will see many similiarities: high fashion, museums, big stores, fine restaurants, etc. Paris does feel like an older city because of the archietecture. Both cities are full of ppl which is a big shock to ppl from small towns. Both cities are exciting bc you could spend 2 weeks in each and have so much to do and to see every day. IMHO, everyone should visit both Paris and NYC in their lifetimes.

These two cities are completely different and both wonderful. Paris, despite having beautiful historic buildings and no massive skyscrapers, has that very busy buzz of any major city like NYC, London or Tokyo. They're all different, but you know...you're definitely in a major city. Have fun!
Family Holidays
For me, Paris gives a more cozy, intimate feeling than NYC. Paris is not that large in terms of square miles, and the small streets and older architecture make Paris a city much more "human" in scale.
