Are all people who are Czech citizens also EU citizens?

How do French people justify charging non-EU citizens more to visit monuments in Paris?

  • I recently took a weekend trip to Paris, and was very disheartened to see that they charge separate rates for non-EU citizens to visit certain monuments. While I understand how this ...show more

  • Answer:

What abosulute rubbish. There is no "discrimination against American tourists": They are charged the same as all other tourists whatever their nationality. There is a concession for all students, and European students or foreigners who are studying in France and hold a French student card are admitted free. All adults pay the same entry fees whether they are French or not. It is more generous than the American system or that of many other countries, and it is the French taxpayer that bears the expense. As for working in France or in Schengen states, the rules were introduced only fairly recently whereas the green card system in the USA has been up and running for years and was the model that was adopted in Europe. Swings and roundabouts!

Bravo Wise Owl! J's statement that they "charge the same amount to visit cultural attractions regardless of a person's nation of origin" in New York is untrue and he is hoisted by his own petard. How moderate of you not to retaliate over the accusation of arrogance! There is a well known adage about seeking the beam in one's eye before the straw in the neighbour's. In fact the "balance" is heavily on the French side since they are generous towards students up to the age of 26 from all 27 EU countries. What is more the entrance fees in Paris for non- EU students are actually cheaper than those charged to any student in New-York, other than those studying within the NY state who are the only ones going in free. In any case, the statue of Liberty is free to anyone but effectively subsidised by the ferry fare, whatever people's age or nationality.

Uh? What monuments? I never saw it anywhere. What kind of identity papers did they ask for?

Can you let us know what Paris monuments specifically.. that charged non-EU citizen higher entrance fee? I was in Paris last November and did not notice getting charged more for being a non-EU visitor. I visited most of the museums/monuments with the Museum Pass and did not pay more than any other visitors. I doubt this is the case.. but I could be wrong. It'd be helpful if you let us know more info.

Cant see how they would police that unless thyere checking passports on entry. I suspect that whats really happening is that they offer EU citizens a discount.

I can see how you feel you've been treated unfairly and want to change the system. Me too, I want to get a job in France, but they're unfairly biased towards EU citizens. It's total discrimination. Here's what you should do. Go back to Paris and organize a march expressing your anger over the unfair treatment of American tourists. That's how all major social change happens in France. There's like a million Americans in Paris in August and all you need is few hundred to close down L'Arc de Triomphe for the afternoon.
