What kind of clothes did they wear in 1970's in Paris, France?

What types of clothes should i wear to not look like a tourist in paris, france?

  • i know not to wear fanny packs or tennis shoes. what do women in their early 20s wear there? i'm going in a week, so it's going to be cold, what should i wear?

  • Answer:

Wear whatever clothes you would wear at home in cold weather. And there's no point in trying not to 'stand out' for the simple reason that Paris is full of tourists at any time of the year anyway, and as soon as you open your mouth, you'll be outed. So stop fretting about something so silly and just enjoy your holiday.

Since the city is flooded with tourists who wear their own style of clothes, it is not imperative to have the French look, but if you want to look inconspicuous, wear classic styles in sober colours. Smart (unadorned) and well cut jeans are always popular amongst younger women, or pants worn with cashmere pull overs, elegant boots and stylish scarves. A classic or trench coat is preferable and you will need it as it is very cold at the moment. You do not want to be hampered by too big a bag. You will need to wear something warm and comfortable, and waterproof comfortable walking shoes. Forget being a fashion statement. The fact is you are a tourist, and because you will be visiting tourist sights, walking around looking at a map or guidebook, using a camera, then everyone will know that you, along with the hundreds of people around you, are a tourist. What is the problem with that?

People in Paris dress in a more sophisticated way than people in America, if that's where you're from. Wearing North Face fleece and outdoorsy clothes like that will probably make you stand out. Also yoga pants and sweatshirts will make you stand out. To blend in, I would say that you should have a wool coat for walking around. Gray is probably the most common color for girls. Black or White are maybe ok. You will want a scarf always. The French like scarves. You will want some good-looking shoes or boots. You will want some kind of wool hat or beanie type of thing to keep your head warm.

Wear what you're comfortable in, but one thing I've noticed is how much more sophisticated they are in style of dress. That isn't to say their style in unachievable. Just don't do casual! You needn't be formal to walk the streets, but try to avoid jeans and a t-shirt. Maybe jeans, a dressier blouse, and heels/boots? A stylish, longer coat will do, probably in black or dark brown--or another color that will match the majority of your outfits.
