My family and I are going to visit Paris and Normandy for a few days this summer. None of us speak any French and are worried about it. Are there things that we should know or learn ...show more

Answer:
No french people are perfectly nice. They do appreciate a Bonjour though. The other suggestion given like saying sil vous plait and stuff are all good. But i would suggest the sentence "excuse-moi, ou est ---" aswell. It means "excuse me, where is ----?" so its good if u need directions

You will be fine - many people speak English. If you use courtesy they will be even more likely to help you. Bonjour - hello s'il vous plait - please merci beaucoup - thanks a lot

Well, french people don't talk very friendly in English. My small advice, don't try to start your conversation if you need to ask something in English. They don't like it. :) Start with Bonjour, Parlez vous anglais? - Hello, Do you speak English? This way they will be pleased and will be willing to help you more. And you're going there only for a few days, you'll be fine!
I live in france, when i first moved i got around with simple but words needed... Hello - Bonjour (Bon-jor) Goodbye - Au revoir (Oh-r-vwa) How are you - Ca va? (Sa va) Where is the... - C'est ou le/la... (Sey ew la/le) Can you tell me the best restaurant is? - Est-ce que tu peut me dire, c'est quoi le plus bon restaurant ici? (Eh-se ker two per mer deer, say kwa le ploo bon restaurant e-see. Thankyou! - Merci! (m-air-see) Can you help me? - Tu peut m'aider? (Two per m-ed-eh) Another good option is too buy a french lifestyle simple travel handbook, it has different categories with conversations. The french sometimes can be sarcastic and pretend not to understand your english accent. Wich is rather annoying sometimes and rude.

Hi there, Yes, French people can act a bit funny when you don't speak French. It is a common thing that people are offended that you didn't bother to learn to language. But never fear, help is here! Hello (morning and daytime) — Bonjour (Bohn-jewr) Good evening — Bon Soir (Bohn-swa) Hi (informal) — Salut (Sa-loo) Good-Night — Bonne Nuit (Bonn-newie) Goodbye — Au revoir (Oh revwar) Goodbye (informal) — Salut (Sa-loo) Yes — Oui (Wee) No — Non (Nonh) Please — S'il Vous Plaît (Seal Voo Play) Thank-you — Merci (Mare-see) You're welcome — De rien (duh ree-yen) OR Je vous en prie (juh vooze en pree) Do you speak English? — Parlez-vous anglais (Par-lay voo on-glay?) I don't understand — Je ne comprends pas (juh nuh kom-pran pah) My name is..... — Je m'appelle (Juh ma-pel) I would like — J'aimerais.... (dj emm-err-ay) How much does it cost?— Combien est-ce que ça coûte? (Kom-byen ess-suh ke sa koot?) What is this? — Qu'est ce que c'est? (Kess ke say?) Help! — A l'aide! (Ah l'edd) Call the Police! — Appelez la Police! (Ah-peh-lay lah Police) Call an Ambulance! — Appelez une Ambulance (Ah-peh-lay oon Ahm-boo-lance) OR Appelez le SAMU (Ah-peh-ay luh Sah-moo) Don't forget that many French people speak English and will readily help you, especially if you showed some sort of effort to speak French (they like that!) Hope this helped, and enjoy your stay in France! JPJ

Many Parissiennes know how to speak English but have this awful habit of excluding others by talking only in French. It feels like a huge attitude problem or as others explain it, the massive inferiority complex., this small man syndrome. it comes out as arrogance (talk to me only in French because that is the only language I will communicate with you) so bring a phrase book. It is a problem finding a place to eat. The corner cafes invariably serve crepes and crusty bread sandwiches, so one ends up starving for meals that fill your stomach with real food. I hope that you will get suggestions of where to eat because I have been here for 3 days and still generally dissatisfied with corner cafes.
